San Diego de Pitiquito Mission

Pitiquito, Sonora, Mexico

San Siego de Pitiquito Mission

Constructed in the 1780s by Franciscans, this lovely plain church sits in the center of its town, grown, as have all the mission communities of northern Sonora, from a native village to a Mexican town. Many of the O'odham for whom the missions were founded were killed by disease and Apache attacks; their descendants either were assimilated into Mexican culture or moved to the United States.

Pitiquito Vista

Pitiquito Mission from Hill. The church at Pitiquito is dintinguished from other missions in the Pimeria Alta by its solid, rectangular appearance. The interior of this church is filled with 18th and 19th Century didactic wall paintings.
